Sick in Bed

The Land of Counterpane by Jessie Wilcox Smith
The Land of Counterpane
by Robert Louis Stevenson
When I was sick and lay a-bed,
I had two pillows at my head,
And all my toys beside me lay,
To keep me happy all the day.
And sometimes for an hour or so
I watched my leaden soldiers go,
With different uniforms and drills,
Among the bed-clothes, through the hills;
And sometimes sent my ships in fleets
All up and down among the sheets;
Or brought my trees and houses out,
And planted cities all about.
I was the giant great and still
That sits upon the pillow-hill,
And sees before him, dale and plain,
The pleasant land of counterpane.

Hello Martha,
I'm a first time visitor and I love your blog! It is a refresing online oasis! Thanks so much.
How sweet!!
Oh Martha! Again you have given me a wonderful idea!
Do you have any idea what year this was painted? I would love to frame this, type up the poem really tiny, and put them both up on the wall in the little girl's room in my High Victorian! Wouldn't it be marvelous?
House will be dated in early 1903, DH wants to include all the "latest" inventions in the house! Thanks again! Cheryl
Probably about 1905. It would be great in your daughter's room.
Martha
I stumbled on to your blog while googling art. Thanks for a wonderful sit. A Child's Garden of Verses brings back so many memories. I remember having measles and not being allowed outside to play. My mother tried to calm me with Stevenson's poems.
I hope your recovery is speedy. I have taken a feed from your site and I look forward to reading more soon.
I had this one in a child's nursery rhyme book that I looked through again and again. I loved the land of Counterpane. Still do, really. Thanks.
