The scene so nice, it's painted twice.

The Trappers Return, 1851 by George Caleb Bingham, Detroit Institute of Arts.
Bingham made a living painting portraits early in his career as an artist, but eventually switched to genre paintings like this.

One in the evening 6 years before -one in the morning 6 years later...? Did he travel with these guys and make sketches? Is that a cat or a tiny dog in the boat? It would be interesting to get some more background on these two paintings. I enjoy your eclectic approach to art history.
The first was so successful he revisited the subject. It is a small pug dog in the later painting.
