Quiet

Monastery Graveyard in the Snow, 1817 by Casper David Friedrich, Former National Gallery, Berlin.
Friedrich's ethereal landscapes have an uncanny calmness. People have very personal reactions to his art. For example, if you are religious, you might concentrate on the ruined church and what that means. If you are feeling isolated or lonely, the winter scene and bare trees, may be what you feel most moved by.
I could use some of this quiet.

Nice choice for the Halloween season! CDF is something of a favourite of mine, though I've only ever seen prints or online photos of his works.
Glad to see more architectural work. Gothic architecture is my favorite - especially depicted as ruins. Sometimes in a setting with cows or shephards. I also enjoy real good cemetary sculptures. Women weeping at graves or throwing themselves over the crypt in their grief. It projects emotion like no other and Bill is right - perfect timing for the holiday.
Very melancholy and moody.
By the way, Friedrich's "Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog" is now used so often in magazines and books that someone has said that there should be a moratorium on its use as a book cover.

Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog
So what was your reaction Martha? Did you "...concentrate on the ruined church.." or did were you moved by the "...the winter scene and bare trees..."
Keep up this great blog,
Cheers,
Addams Family stuff.
Yes, romanticism, German, very recognizable, a very good example.
