Foresight

Wild Flowers, 1938 by Grant Wood, Assorted collections.

During the Depression many artists were not able to make a living so two New York Art Dealers commissioned working artists such as Wood to do a series of lithographs that they sold in the back of magazines for $5-$10 each. Today some of them go for around $10,000. If only I could travel back in time....

The same American Gothic, Grant Wood?

WOW!

And that is sad what these artists work will fetch now years after their death....

The way values go up after death makes basic economic sense, in that the source of future works is now absent. It could also be a self-fufilling prophecy, in that people may purchase works after an artists death because they are aware of the trend.
