Ah-HA! There's a wonderful short story by Kelly Link, in her Stranger Things Happen anthology, titled "Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose." I had no idea the story title had any referent outside the story.
I will have to check it out - thanks.

Although you can buy the book through Amazon and other bookstores, it's also available for free download here.
Kelly Link's fiction is great. Her current collection, Magic for Beginners was picked by Time as one of the five best fiction books of 2005.
