Ideal California

A Bigger Splash, 1967 by David Hockney, Tate Gallery, London.

Hockney was interested in capturing a splash of water that only lasts for mere seconds and depicting it on canvas. Throughout his career he has done series on the same subjects.

Swimming pools also; apparently when he immigrated to the U.S. he was flabbergasted at all the swimming pools people had in California, both loved them and found them a bit funny, so had to put it the idea on to canvas.

There is that sterotype about the English always being in the pool when they visit CA or FL....

I am sure I will post some Chinese art again, I will try for next week.

OK, I don't like the Hockney paintings as much as his amazing photographic collections, but that's not why I'm commenting....
I just wanted to say THANKYOU and though I'm sure you here it often, I really like your site! So far, my two favorites were the mermaid and the sailor (and only just this time did I realize just how close he is to going in, one foot and leg in the water!) and the pirate. I actually did a picture of a group of men on a lifeboat with high seas and a burning boat behind them but it wasn't as good as the one shown.
Thanx again!
