The first time someone told me to look at Chinese paintings up and down instead of across, it made seeing the whole image so much easier.

Oh! I never knew there was a "way' to look at paintings! Up and down, nor across..I seem to look in the center and spiral out. I am intrigued by this.
There really isn't a rule about it, but when you are looking at something that comes from another frame of reference, it makes sense to adapt your view. We read horizonally while Chinese calligraphy is written vertically.
Some chinese paintings are like a journey, you follow a path or a stream through the painting, therefore "perspective" isn't the main point, the trip is...
