The "Gothic" in American Gothic refers to the window in the background of the painting. It is a style seen in gothic churches with the point on the top. The woman is Wood's sister Nan and the man was the town dentist.

It's great the way the pitchfork is reflected in the man's shirt.
...and in the over-alls and the window.

This has got to be one of the top ten most parodied images (along with The Scream, the Abbey Road cover, and the Mona Lisa), but I still love it anyway.
