Sepia

The Abbey in the Oakwood, 1809-10 by Casper David Friedrich, Schloss Charlottenburg, Berlin.
Friedrich's remarkable landscapes in the Romantic style influenced the great landscape artists of the Hudson River School and the Rocky Mountain School. This work was done in sepia.

Now you've hit one of my all time favorite artists.
Here's another similar one from a book I have of his work. It's called: Monastery Graveyard in the Snow, 1817 - 1819, oils on canvas. Destroyed in 1945 during the war.
You'll probably have to copy the link and the paste it into your browser.

This is one of my favorites too, thank you for adding the link.

I never tire of this blog because you are so eclectic in your choices. I love Friedrich's work. I wish there were more of his paintings to look at in the U.S.
I also like Church very much.
(I think you meant to type "Freidrich" and not "Church" at the start of your second paragraph.)
Thank you.

These are totally cool. I'm going to have to get a print of one.
