Olga in an armchair. This early portrait is of his first wife Olga whom he married in 1918 and separated from in 1927, but never divorced. She was active in society and Picasso had disdain for that lifestyle.

ahh..why would you call this "before cubism" when this took place after both analytic and synthetic cubism when he moves back to spain and returns to classicism?
Because he returned to a style he used before he and Braque developed their cubist interpretations.
Just for a second, forget the history, forget the "clever dick art" and consider what is before you. A well executed painting in oil? "Believable" as an image, it is recognisable as an individual or a good portrait; it proves skill in observation and ability to master the ability to produce "what he, the Artist intended, not left to chance”. He could paint. At least from this one can say he had ability. His real gift of course was that he sold it all!
