Yourish on the Washington shooting

When you go to church on Sunday, do you ever wonder if a gunman will break into your church and start indiscriminately shooting?

When you’re going to the gym at the YMCA, do you have armed policemen standing outside the door? Do you have to go through security checks to get to a lecture at the Y?

When you drop your children off at religious school, does that school have armed guards and bullet-proof glass?

When you go to services on Christmas and Easter, do you have to increase security, not because of the added number of worshippers, but because of possible terrorist attacks?

Jews do.

Jerry - I think you've been reading my blog long enough to know that I write about similar themes - sitting in shul and imagining that there are shower heads ready to seep lethal gases into the sanctuary the same way the death camps gassed concentration camp victims. I read Meryl Yourish on and off, but thanks for posting this piece. I really don't know, if you've never been a member of a group that gets picked on, if you can imagine what it's like to determine where the line is between rational concern and irrational fear. But for anyone else to tell me that I shouldn't feel it, well, you can imagine what I might say to them. :)

Btw, I wonder if any of my non-Jewish friends who'll be invited to my son's bar mitzvah would be concerned about coming to my synagogue, complete with several Pepper Pike policemen guarding it.
